Exactly where you are

In a Moment | Issue 32

During a recent morning walk, a thought popped into my mind:

You are exactly where you are

A simple idea, perhaps not even that profound.

But its simplicity was what resonated.

It wasn't -- you are exactly where you need to be

or you are exactly where you should be

or exactly where you ought to be

Instead

You are exactly where you are.

And with that simple thought, I experienced a sense of liberation, a feeling of freedom.

For a moment, I was able to shed the shoulds, the woulds, the coulds, the perhaps and the mights.

Instead, I remembered

I am exactly where I am.

I let go of the divine schemes, the forecasting, the planning, the agendas.

I released the ideas of a grand objective, my place in the universe, my deeper purpose or meaning,

and slid into the simple reality of

I am exactly where I am.

At that moment, I was walking along the pier, the sky a subtle pink as the sun rose in the east.

At that moment, the air was cold but also energizing.

The sounds of ships on the water, of cars rushing over the freeway, of birds chirping, of the river lapping against the edge of the pier.

I let my mind shed the notions of whether I was in the right place, in the right position, in the right moment of my experience of life.

And in a moment,

I simply

was.

And so as you move through the anticipation of the end of the year, or a much-needed break, or a gift, or a gathering or a reunion with loved ones.

Perhaps you let go of the ideas of where you should be, what goals you have accomplished and what is yet to do.

and instead, slide into the reality

that you are

exactly

where you are.
