In a Moment - Issue 23

I spent a few days in upstate New York earlier this month. I stayed in small cabin near the woods. I woke to the sound of birds calling, chickens clucking, goats muttering and leaves falling.

I sat in the sun and felt it's warm embrace in the cool morning.

I was intoxicated by the smell of pine needles.

I watched steam rise off of the cold lake as the sun gently warmed it's waters.

And I found myself grateful. Realizing that each morning is a gift. A precious opportunity to offer more.

To be a bit kinder than the day before.

Or more patient.

Or to offer a bit more joy.

Each day is a new chance, not to change radically, although that may happen from time to time. But an opportunity to be a little bit better. I know I can stand to be a bit more kind or gentle or patient. And each day I get a chance to work towards that.

Each morning as I sit, taking in the day, watching thoughts cascade through my awareness and witness my breathing body, I allow myself to connect to that gift. And ask myself, what can I unwrap today? What little bit can I bring a little more of in each of my interactions, with others and with myself?

What about you? What can you offer a little more of today?
